How to Improve Mental Math Skills?
By Dave Lim, Head of Mathematics at EduZ Tuition. NTU Nanyang Scholar, first-class honours, over 15 years of teaching including at Nanyang Junior College.

Mental math skills are essential in many areas of life, from everyday calculations to more complex problem-solving. If you want to improve your mental math skills, here are some tips to help you:
- Practice regularly: The more you practice mental math, the better you will become. Try to do mental math exercises regularly, starting with simple problems and gradually increasing the difficulty level.
- Break down the problem: When you encounter a difficult mental math problem, try to break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. This can help you to visualize the problem and come up with a solution.
- Memorize key facts: Memorizing basic multiplication tables, addition and subtraction facts, and other key formulas can help you to solve problems more quickly and accurately.
- Use estimation: Estimation can be a useful tool when solving mental math problems. By estimating the answer, you can quickly eliminate some of the options and narrow down the possibilities.
- Use shortcuts: There are many shortcuts and tricks that you can use to solve mental math problems more quickly. For example, when multiplying by 5, you can simply add a zero to the end of the number and divide by 2.
- Stay focused: Mental math requires concentration and focus. Try to eliminate distractions and focus your attention on the problem at hand.
- Use technology: There are many apps and online tools available that can help you to improve your mental math skills. These tools can provide feedback, track your progress, and offer a variety of mental math exercises.
In summary, to improve your mental math skills, you should practice regularly, break down the problem, memorize key facts, use estimation, use shortcuts, stay focused, and use technology. With time and practice, you can become more confident and accurate in your mental math abilities.
